By the simple fact that you have come to this page, your curiosity is piqued. There's a high probability that you have already figured out what this will mean to your radio operations and maybe even how this works. Likely you are correct on both points. Locus Location Systems has perfected the technology and they are now offering it to the Motorola Trunk System community.
Genesis is proud to have a Technology Alliance Partnership with Locus Location Systems. We believe in the company, their technology and in what it will mean to the safety of your radio users.
How does it work?
It's called Time Of Arrival technology. When the PTT button is pressed on the Motorola radio, the data signal that goes to the control channel is detected at 3 or more locations. The arrival time of the signal is compared, math calculations done, and the radio's coordinates are determined.
Can I do this on SmartNet and SmartZone?
Absolutely. Your Trunk site is used for one point of signal reception. Additional receive sites (like satellite receivers) are added to allow SafePoint to do the Time Of Arrival calculations. The quantity of extra receive sites will vary depending on terrain, obstructions, and other factors. All of the calculations are done at a central point where the results, including the Radio ID, Alias, Department, Clone Confidence Level and other data is displayed and stored.
What about Simulcast?
Again, yes. We look at the mobile's transmit signal and data signature, not the repeaters.
What is the accuracy?
The more receivers that can be reached, the better the accuracy. When the Locus engineers survey your SmartNet, Astro or SmartZone system, they will work with you to decide how many of their ADvanced DIgital Receiver units need to be installed to achieve the accuracy that you want. In summary, accuracy is dependent on:
- The location and distance between the ADDIRs.
- Signal strength at the ADDIR.
- Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP).
- Distribution of the land use clutter on the signal.
In general, you can achieve accuracy to two city blocks with the right engineering and the right terrain. Think about it – that's FAR better than you can do without SafePoint!
Is GPS bad?
No. Not at all! But to retrofit your existing Trunking System with GPS on every mobile and every hand held portable...well, you get the picture. Also, remember that GPS would rely on the ability of the portable radio to see a minimum of 4 satellites that get affected by things like heavy smoke, heavy weather, being inside buildings, etc. SafePoint is not affected by these things. SafePoint is totally PASSIVE and non-intrusive to your Motorola Trunk System. There is NO modification to the system itself or to the radios!
What does the interface look like?
Glad you asked! If you have ever used Microsoft MapPoint®, you have half of the picture. SafePoint links to MapPoint and places each radio on the map with its associated data (like ID, Alias, etc.). As you resize and zoom the map, all of the radios reposition themselves. You also still have all of the features and power that comes with MapPoint. If you happen to have your own existing CAD system, SafePoint can interface with most existing CAD systems as an enhancement.
Why is Genesis involved with Locus?
- First, because we believe in Locus, the SafePoint product, and what it means to the safety of our radio users and our nation. Genesis is known for bringing the "best of breed" solutions to the Motorola Trunking marketplace. Most of our solutions are invented and crafted by Genesis. For radio location, it is Locus, no question.
- Second, we are enhancing the Locus product by combining our existing GenWatch3 technologies to detect Cloned Radios, monitor Trunk System health, and many other features. Think about it – LIVE on a map you could see where 2 radios are located that we suspect as being cloned! Watch this page for many more features and announcements as the year rolls on!
Can I use SafePoint to visually show my MDT units that are already GPS equipped?
Yes, in the very near future TrackerX, SafePoint's mapping software, will be able to capture the MDT GPS information and display each unit on the map. Contact us for more information and availability.
What do I do if I'm interested in more information?
If you have a Motorola Trunk System, you can either contact Locus directly or contact Genesis. Simply for tracking purposes we would love for you to contact Genesis first.
Contact Locus Location Systems directly at www.locususa.com. Please mention that you heard about them from Genesis! |
