GenWatch3 2.0.3 (All Packages)
GenWatch3 2.0.3 can be installed and run on Windows Vista provided that the limitations and workarounds
that follow are dealt with. The reason for
these limitations centers around the
'oddities' that currently exist in the first
release of Windows Vista. There may be further limitations or workarounds determined in the future and this page will be updated to reflect them. Previous version of GenWatch3 (2.0.2 and previous) will
not run on Windows Vista.
The GenWatch3 service is run under the NetworkService user in Vista. NetworkService is able to access/read in the installation directory in Vista, but not in Windows XP.
Applications do not have write privileges to existing files in the Program Files directory after installation.
Files created in the ProgramData directory have write privileges only for the user who created the file.
The above limitations of the Program Files and ProgramData directories require that GenWatch3 be installed to the root drive (C:\) by default to the C:\Genesis\GenWatch3 directory. This is due to configuration files needing to be read from and written to by both the GenWatch3 service and the GenWatch3 client GUIs/applications.
There is potentially a limitation on the number of DirectX surfaces that can be drawn on the screen at one time. This can result in a limitation in the number of GenWatch3 module GUIs open simultaneously.
All Windows users who will be using GenWatch3 must be added as SQL Server users. This includes both local and domain users. Local Administrator and Domain Administrator are two separate users (unlike in Windows XP).
Do not use a 'move operation' to put files in the GenWatch3 installation directory. Such files will become unusable. To put files in the GenWatch3 installation directory (such as licenseupdate.lic files) right-click on the file and click Copy. Then, in the installation directory, right-click and click Paste.
When copy and pasting licenseupdate.lic files into the GenWatch3 directory, they may not immediately disappear as stated in the documentation, even if they are read and the license is successfully updated. After the license has been updated, the licenseupdate.lic file can be safely removed manually.
Files created in the GenWatch3 folder or subfolders will have write access only by the entity creating the file. (i.e. Log files by NetworkServices or Export files in Alias by the logged in Windows user)
The user first running a report will be the only one able to subsequently run or modify that report. To allow another user to run the report, the appropriate Excel (.xls) file must be removed from the Reports folder in the GenWatch3 folder.
EzSaveWin
The above restrictions for GenWatch3 also apply to EzSaveWin. The writing of files to the installation directory (log files, backup files, etc) is limited as described above. The copy/paste/move limitations described above for licenseupdate.lic files also applies. In general, all limitations regarding GenWatch3 that are not specific to the GenWatch3 service can be applied to EzSaveWin.
GenSZAI
GenSZAI can be installed and run on Windows Vista.
The Queue folder paths (Reader and DB) should be configured using the GenSZAI Setup application. The paths should be set to folders residing on a hard drive with large amounts of free space. The paths also must be able to be written to by the user running the GenSZAI services.
Trio
Trio can be installed and run on Windows Vista. However, it is possible that some reports cannot be run at all on Windows Vista.
