How We Do It
For many reasons, Motorola has not elected to create an RF-modem / RIMII type device for P25. Our customers have told us for quite some time that they want and need software tools thatEFJohnson operate from the P25 Control Channel (called the CAI, Common Air Interface in P25).    We found the EF Johnson RS5300 radio. That radio operates on SmartNet, SmartZone and P25 in the 700MHz and 800MHz bands. We found that it allows us to set one 'flag' in the programming of the radio to then stream the P25 CAI out of the radio. We wrote a 'front end' for our popular GenWatch3 software that works with this radio. This allows us do many things, including allowing the SAME software that operates on SmartNet and SmartZone systems to now operate on P25 systems!

We have also looked, in detail, at the CAI to determine what information is available from the CAI that is not specific to any manufacturer. Click here to see that detailed list. The quick answer is that 90% of everything that you are used to seeing on the 3600 Control Channel is available on the CAI with no special licensing of any manufacturer specific information.

P25 compatible software

Project 25 Integration With Genesis Performance Management Software
Since 1983 Genesis has been creating clever software tools for managing Motorola trunk systems. Now we have expanded all of our tools into P25 trunking. Genesis has added a P25 "front end" to  award winning GenWatch, GEnSAC wireless console enhancement, and other control channel based software. Any P25 system can now take advantage of Genesis' clever trunking performance management software tools.

Through the Open Standard of P25, your agency is no longer limited to proprietary manufacturer protocols. Genesis' leading-edge software can interface seamlessly with a 3600 baud RIM-II and the 9600 baud open format. The power of Genesis Trunking Management Tools integrates fully with P25 compatible hardware, thereby maximizing the open standard's capabilities.

Genesis tools for P25 now available:

  • GenSZAI & NetVista for Motorola Astro P25 ATIA
  • GenWatch3-25 off air monitoring and control for P25
  • GEnSAC allows you to display IDs and Emergency calls on your Centracom Gold Elite or MCC 5500

Genesis is pleased to be a corporate member of PTIG! The P25 Technology Information Group.

P25 Overview

Project 25 (P25) is the standard for interoperable digital two-way wireless communications products and systems. Developed under state, local and federal government guidance and Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) governance, P25 is gaining worldwide acceptance for public safety, security, public service, and commercial applications. The published P25 standards suite is administered by the TIA in their Mobile and Personal Private Radio Standards Committee (TR-8). Equipment that demonstrates compliance with P25 is able to meet a set of minimum requirements to fit the needs of public safety. These include the ability to interoperate with other P25 equipment, for example so that users on different systems can talk via direct radio contact.

Benefits of P25
P25 targets four primary objectives:

  1. Allow effective, efficient, and reliable intra-agency and inter-agency communications
All participant agencies will have access to advanced communications capabilities meeting regulatory requirements for radio spectrum efficiency. Through P25, organizations can easily implement interoperable and seamless joint communication in both routine and emergency circumstances. P25 is the standard of federal agencies for digital radio systems, so interoperability between all levels of government will not be prevented by use of incompatible technologies.
  2. Ensure competition in system life cycle procurements
Now, agencies can choose from multiple vendors and products, ultimately saving money and gaining the freedom to select from the widest range of equipment and features.
  3. Provide user-friendly equipment
Users can take full advantage of their radios' lifesaving capabilities on the job — even under adverse conditions — with minimal training.
  4. Improve radio spectrum efficiency
Through P25, systems have enough capacity to handle calls and allow room for growth, even in areas where the spectrum is crowded and it is difficult for agencies to obtain licenses for additional radio frequencies.

The P25 plan provides for changing to standards-based modes of command and control as the standardized devices in operation enable such change.
