Support For GenSZAI / GenWatch3 NetVista

pcAnywhere Is The Key
click to view support diagramGod bless Symantec and pcAnywhere! They have made Genesis look like heroes to our customers.
We have used pcAnywhere as a way of helping our clients since 1994 and it just keeps on getting better. There are other remote PC software tools on the market, but there is a lot to be said for a history of success. Using it is simple:

  • You need an account with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • Open a connection from the GenSZAI Accumulator or Data Warehouse just like you are going to browse the Internet.
  • Start up pcAnywhere and select "Be A Host". In a second or two, you will get a notice that pcAnywhere is "Waiting For A Connection" and you will be able to see an IP Address that is temporarily assigned to your GenSZAI PC.
  • Give that IP Address to your GenSZAI support specialist over the phone or via email.
  • Your Genesis support specialist will start up our pcAnywhere and 'route' to your temporary IP address through the Internet.
  • This gives a clean, fast connection for us to upgrade, fix or train you on your Genesis software.
  • When the session is finished, you can disconnect the dial-up Internet connection for security reasons.

pcAnywhere allows for a high level of security. Passwords and other authentication can be setup between us and you, inside pcAnywhere. Also, since your connection to the Internet is open, only for the duration of our support time with you, exposure is minimal.

Security
If your company allows a full time Internet connection via a corporate firewall, we can use that as well. We have one large client that has given Genesis a Security Token for access to their WAN. From there, we use pcAnywhere and Terminal Services.

Terminal Services
In many installations Terminal Services (TS) is more than adequate. TS is available as an installable option with MS Server 2000. The upside is that TS is small, lean, and fast. The downside is that it does not have file transfer capability. With some of our clients, we use a pcAnywhere connection to gain access to one machine in the Genesis LAN equipment, and then we can use TS to operate the other machines. If a file transfer is needed, we send it to the first machine via pcAnywhere, and then transfer it to other machine(s) on the Genesis LAN.
