GenWatch3® Archiver has the ability to save all of your Control Channel Data for months and even years with no loss of detail. Some products on the market store one day of data in a file, and a new file is created each day. Other products reduce the resolution of the data the longer it is stored. We do neither. The GW3 Archiver stores all data for a full year. This allows you the maximum reporting capability, down to seeing the control channel details about the actual call, months...even years after the call occurred, provided you backup your database.
Once adata packet is decoded, it is stored in one of several data tables, depending on the packet and depending on how you have setup GenWatch3®. GW3 allows you to store everything, nothing, and all variations in between. The amount of hard drive space you will need depends upon:
- Your daily call volume
- Amount of time needed to keep the history in each type of table in the database
- Whether or not you need to store the RAW control channel data
The Archiver also has the ability to capture the RAW control Channel data. If you look at it, it won't a bit of sense. But to Motorola engineers, it is like gold. We have added the ability to constantly have 2 weeks of RAW Control Channel data being recorded. You never know when an issue might come up where you might need the RAW data, so we felt this was the ultimate way to always be ready — actually it was a great suggestion from a Motorola Field Engineer (see, we do listen!). We have the ability for you to look at that data in a built in viewer, and we give you the ability to easily export the file in exactly the format the Motorola support engineers like to see it. Once again, this is a clever feature to give you more than you expected from Genesis.
Hard Drive Tips
GenWatch3® bundles come standard with an 80 GB hard drive. We are certifying the hardware and software combination via Motorola with this configuration. The 80 GB hard drive will store much more than a year of data from the average SmartNet system.
Please note: that the Commander LE Bundle (SIP replacement) is 'locked' at a maximum of 1.5 GB of data and cannot be changed by the user. In all other GW3 bundles, the larger the drive, the better. At the price of hard drives these days, it is very inexpensive to get even a 120 GB HD and have more room than you want, plus some "wiggle room".
While we (Motorola and Genesis) will not be able to certify that your installation will work properly with a >80GB hard drive, logic will tell you that you should be just fine to do that on your own. We also have easy ways to allow you to move the database off of the GenWatch3® machine and on to your existing large, secure data storage. We might suggest that you wait past your warranty period before attempting any of this, but it does work very well!
