Configuration Examples

Our basic GW3 design took the approach that one size does not fit all. Almost every sub system in GW3 is modularized to give it ultimate flexibility. You do not have to grow modules linearly. Some features can reside on some work stations, configured as Technical Operators, while others can choose modules to be more Operations type locations. Modules do not necessarily need to reside on the same PC if there is adequate LAN bandwidth between the modules. The largest consumer of CPU resources is the GW3-ARCHiver. If this option is not purchased, a large number of systems and/or modules can be operated from one single machine. Likewise, if the GW3-ARCHiver is relegated to its own server, many other modules can cohabitate on a single PC. All of this flexibility does add to complexity. Genesis is attempting to create a web based product configuration tool to help manage this.

Having said all of that, for Motorola, we have taken a 'simple is better' approach with the Commander Series and the other GenWatch3 bundles. Everyone will agree that there are likely hundreds of variations of SIMSII, SIP and Site Lens installations. Various options, distribution of modules, etc. To spend the time and money to chase down all of the permutations that will exist seemed to be the wrong approach. We have decided to build THREE Commander packages that will encompass all of the possible options that we will face in the field. These are easy replacements for SIMSII and SIP. We have also created bundles like GW3-SW that will replace 98% of the SystemWatch installations. The GW3-SL bundle replaces the most COMMON Site Lens configurations, but not all. The GW3-GSP is a bundle that has ultimate flexibility to be configured almost any way you want. Obviously, the GW3-GSP is more complicated.

GenWatch3®  Commander Host Bundle
(Replacement for SIMSII Server)

The GenWatch3® Commander Host Bundle (GW3-HO1-B) is only available from Motorola. It is a specially priced bundle of all GW3 modules necessary to make sure we have covered all SIMSII options. For a detailed look at what this includes click here. As purchased, GW3-HO1-B will come installed and semi-configured on an HP xw4600 computer. We say semi-configured at this stage since at this time we are not totally sure about what information we will receive with the order. The more information we receive, the more we can pre-configure your machine. Our goal is to have this as close to a 'plug and play' as possible. Obviously, there will be differences since you will be moving from older VME Unix technology with serial 'dumb' terminals to modern Windows and Windows networking machines. You might like to look at our Installation Planning page for more details.

The Commander Host comes with all of the interfaces for all of the modules, as well as all of the 'behind the scenes' engines. The customer supplied RF-modems and RIMIIs are connected to the Host along with CAD connections (if applicable) and External Alarms (click on the diagram at the right to see this in graphic form). This means that from the keyboard, mouse and monitor that is attached to the GenWatch3®  Commander Host, you can actually operate the GenWatch3®  software. We HIGHLY recommend that if you are going to do a lot of reporting that you use the power of your existing LAN to move the SQL database, after all of your rebanding has settled down, to a separate machine. The best location would be where the customer's other databases are centrally housed and backed up. To be clear, there is no problem keeping the SQL database on the Host and running the reports from the Host. There is an additional level of data security when the GW3 Commander database in relocated. Contact Genesis directly for more information on this.

Hardware Specifications for GenWatch3® Host Configuration

GW3-HO1-B will be supplied with the hardware listed below. It is possible in some special cases to supply your own hardware as long as it meets or exceeds the specifications below. It will be the responsibility of the customer’s IT department to meet or exceed these specifications. The elements that you might like to improve on would be RAM, HD capacity and the monitor. You can certainly increase any or all of these with no impact on the GW3 performance. The video card that we are supplying can easily support a second monitor. While we are only supplying a single 20" monitor, you can supply your own additional monitor and/or a larger monitor to increase the viewing area. It should be noted that adding a second monitor is not certified by Motorola. The customer should use their best judgment just as they do with other IT purchases to procure the machine that will work best for them now and in the foreseeable future. For the customer to obtain a Genesis hardware configuration certification, the Genesis Hardware Certification (GW3-HWCERT) can be purchased directly from Genesis.

  • Connection to the RIMII will remain RS232.
  • Your RF-modem will need to be upgraded to include the rebanding band plan firmware.
  • CAD CONNECTIONS: If you have CAD systems connected to your SIMSII, connecting them to the GW3 Host should be only a matter of changing the gender of the cable.
  • TERMINALS: Previously any terminals attached to the SIMSII VME were 'dumb' terminals and were connected (if local) via RS232. If the terminals were remote, they used a modem. Your GW3 Host will be connected via Ethernet TCP/IP to your LAN. GW3 Client machines will also be connected to the same LAN.

GenWatch3® Commander Client Bundle

The GenWatch3®  Commander Client Bundle (GW3-CL1-B) is similar to the Host, but with fewer required software pieces and less hardware. In the SIMSII world, there were 'dumb' terminals that communicated with the SIMSII server via RS232 (or modem for remote terminals). In the GW3 world, these will be workstations that communicate over the customer's LAN via TCP/IP. All of the live information that is viewed on a GW3 Client machine will come from the GW3 Host. All reports that are run from Client machines will 'look' to the SQL database that resides on the Host. The Host bundle comes to the customer allowing up to 24 Client connections.

Hardware Specification for GenWatch3®  Client Configuration

GW3-CL1-B will be supplied with the hardware listed below. It is possible in special conditions to supply your own hardware as long as it meets or exceeds the specifications below. It will be the responsibility of the customer’s IT department to meet or exceed these specifications. The elements that you might like to improve on would be RAM, HD capacity and the monitor. Do note that the HD on the client machine has very little function since it is not storing the historical control channel data. That is done on the Host machine. INSTALLATION NOTES: Going from UNIX 'dumb' terminals or PCs running Procomm on your  SIMSII to a Windows XP Pro based machine is a huge leap, but it is a leap in a direction that should make your life easier and better. The SIMSII terminals were simply screens and keyboards that allowed you to run SIMSII 'sessions' that actually ran on the host. In GW3 Commander world, your GW3 Commander Client is actually doing much more work.  Here are some things to be aware of-

  • The GW3 Commander Client is connected to the GW3 commander Host via the customers existing TCP/IP LAN. Bandwidth requirements are rather minimal for each terminal. Genesis can assist with the calculation of these requirements.
  • There is no RF-modem/RIMII at any client. All data is fed to it from the Host machine.
  • There is no CADI port connection, no External alarm (EA) box and no SMT connection from and client machine.
  • If you want to run EzSaveWin from a client machine (for SMT communications), you will use the pcAnywhere connection to internally contact the Host machine in order to rin EzSaveWin from there. BE AWARE: Any applications taht are open on the Host machine by a supervisor, WILL be available to anyone that is remotely logging in via pcAnywhere.
  • All reports can be run from any GW3 Client machine. The reports access the SQL data file that is located on the GW3 Host machine via the network, and the results of their queries are displayed in the GW3 Excel reports on the Client machine. As such, they can be manipulated, viewed and printed from the Client machines.

GenWatch3® Commander LE Bundle
(Replacement for SIP)

LE stands for Limited Edition. SIP was a DOS based software that was a 'subset' of SIMSII. That means that it could only do some of the commands that a SIMSII could do. You can see the set of commands that GW3-LE can do in detail by clicking here.

Hardware Specification for GenWatch3® LE Configuration

GW3-LE1-B will be supplied with the hardware listed below. It is possible to supply your own hardware as long as it meets or exceeds the specifications below. It will be the responsibility of the customer’s IT department to meet or exceed these specifications. The elements that you might like to improve on would be RAM, HD capacity and the monitor. Please note that to supply the nearest 'equivalent facility' we are restricting the size of the historical control channel data in the LE bundle to 2Gb.

  • INSTALLATION NOTES: Going from a DOS based SIP to a Windows XP Pro based machine is a leap, but it is a leap in a direction that should make your life easier and better. Most of you have done this over the years with other software so it should come naturally. Here are some things to be aware of-
    • Connection to the RIMII will remain RS232.
    • Your RF-modem will need to be upgraded to include the rebanding band plan firmware.
    • TERMINALS: SIP was sold as being ONLY stand alone. LE is also bundled this way. Your LE will have all of the hardware pieces to allow it to expand and allow Client terminals to be connected. All you will need is to purchase the correct licensing from Genesis or Motorola and you will be able to expand your LE capabilities. It is expected that this increase will not be directly covered by Sprint Nextel.
