The History of EzSave
EzSaveII was designed for the Motorola Professional who needs to access his system, communicate with his systems, backup important data files and be available to reload data in the event of a crash. It communicates with the SMT (System Manager Terminal) port of SmartNet style Central Controllers.
EzSaveII
EZSaveII can handle daily operations such as activations and deactivations. System inquiries, as well as month-end duties for SMR operators such as dumping the Airtime Summary (SAIR), Telephone Summary (STEL), and the Summary of Long Distance (SLNG) files are also a snap!
EzSaveII

It will also capture all diagnostic messages (*DIAG) from your central controller and interpret them into English. All controller functions on all models of central controllers are available from EZSaveII.

All systems can be called after hours by using EzSaveII's Backup Scheduler. Scheduler can handle 200 events.

EzSave was first created in the late 1980s by Larry Voyles, a Motorola SMR operator in Georgia. Larry and Phil Burks met at a trade show and began trading their experiences of their Central Controllers (CCs) crashing and having to reload all of the SAC and SUBS and AUTH records by hand. Larry had created ProCom "scripts" that could run to fairly well emulate the hand key strokes that were needed to reload things. Phil and Larry talked about creating a software that would do this, but more elegantly, and one that would automatically backup CCs. EzSave was the result.

All of the trunk systems and the company Larry worked for was sold to Nextel. Larry turned EzSave over to Phil and Phil's new company, The Genesis Group. In November, 1991, Phil hired Greg Hendry (and Greg is still at Genesis) to take Larry's code and bring it to the next level. In 1995, EzSave was deployed to communicate with, backup and restore over 800 Nextel owned Motorola trunk systems all across the USA. Almost every variation of GRD> was found at that time! EzSaveII, as it was called then, quickly became the industry standard. It was purchased by Motorola for SMR operations around the globe, and in Schaumburg.

In 2002 it was obvious that DOS was fairly dead as far as Microsoft was concerned, but Motorola was still selling Central Controllers for SmartNet. Genesis decided to recreate EzSave again, but this time from the ground up using the latest Microsoft .NET programming techniques.

EzSaveWin – backup for the Motorola Trunking central controller and more.
EzSaveWin Overview
Motorola Central Controllers have an internal operating system called Guardian (GRD>). System managers use GRD> to permit radios to use the system and set other operating parameters on the system. Talking to it can be like working with DOS. EzSaveWin greatly simplifies the job by automating many of the daily GRD> tasks.

Motorola had CAS and SMT Access. Now you can have EzSaveWin! EzSaveWin (EzSW) has all of the capabilities of SMT Access and much more. One of the largest differences is- rather than allowing you to access only one site with a maximum of 2 Central Controllers (CCs) as in SMT Access, we allow you to access 6 CCs by default, in any combination (you can purchase a license upgrade in groups of 6 with an unlimited maximum). With EzSW, you can also create a backup schedule of anything in the CC. EzSW allows you to not only do the 'Database Backup' (which is a CSAVE and MSAVE) but you can also do the same operations in ASCII so you can see and understand the results. Below is a complete list of the features that you'll find in EzSaveWin...

EzSaveWin Features
  • 100% Windows Technology.
  • Can Operate stand alone.
  • Can be started from GenWatch3®.
  • Supports 6 controllers standard. Can be easily expanded in blocks of 6 controllers.
  • Supports all known 6809 and MTC3600 Central Controllers.
  • Supports Main and Standby Central Controller session, sequentially.
  • Supports Modem or direct RS232 connection to SMT ports.

SMT Access Features

From the 68P81000Y50-D manual:

  • Issue commands as if you were at the central controller.
  • Control system functions remotely. You have command line access to the central controller and the ability to query an individual radio's central controller status.
  • Store data. Use Windows 2000 server to backup and restore subscriber and authorization databases. This allow the network manager to preserve data from the central controller database in the event of a system failure.
  • View diagnostics for the central controller. You can identify and diagnose system issues.
  • Use remote access. You can access SmartNet central controller(s) from a remote location using SMT Access. Also, in a multi-user configuration, you can remotely access the SMT Access server from client workstations.
  • Access both an active and a standby central controller simultaniously.
