Requirements & Restrictions

As EF Johnson radio programming specialists, Genesis highly recommends that we program your EF Johnson® radio for you. Our goal is to send the radio to you in a "plug-and-play" condition.

Note to EF Johnson dealers: If you would prefer to purchase and program your own radio, that is acceptable. However, if Genesis' assistance is needed for implementation of items necessary to operate the Topaz RF-modem, additional fees will be involved.

P25 Trunking Programming Requirements
To ensure proper P25 Trunking Programming, customers must provide Genesis with each of the following:

  • Completed System Key Authorization Letter for Genesis to program radios
  • Unused Talkgroup ID *
  • Radio ID *
  • WACN ID
  • System ID
  • Band
  • RFSSID
  • Site ID
  • Control Channel Frequencies (4)

* The EFJ radio must affiliate with the trunk system. The ID for this radio must be activated in the system.

P25 Conventional Programming Requirements
To ensure proper P25 Conventional Programming, customers must provide Genesis with each of the following:

3600 SmartNet Programming Requirements
To ensure proper 3600 SmartNet Programming, customers must provide Genesis with each of the following:

Additional Requirements & Restrictions
Please note:

  • Cannot transmit ISP to P25 networks
  • Radio must affiliate with P25 networks
  • Bundle package does not include antenna, coax cable, UPS or installation
  • Order must contain operating frequencies
  • Programming permission letter will be forwarded to customer for signature so Genesis can program radio

Technical Information

Each EFJ53SL includes the Topaz interface, a TCIP/IP protocol. Genesis is among a handful of companies licensed to implement this protocol. Topaz allows us simple access to the CAI and Control Channel to receive OSP and OSW data. We can also create and send ISW data. However, we cannot send ISP data, due to a restriction in the P25 CAI protocol.

EF Johnson ES-5300As of Summer 2008, EF Johnson is in the process of "rolling out" the ES-5300 Series.

  1. The ES series radio will allow for Topaz TCP/IP connectivity to the radio rather than the current RS232. This does open up additional possibilities.

Please note:

  1. There is only 1 VHF RF range. The EFJ difference in their manual was based on power (50w vs. 100w) so we are only listing the lower power radio.
  2. All radios will be supplied with the Topaz Ethernet interface to the radio.
  3. All 3600 version radios will be supplied with 3600 AND P25 firmware in the radio (for your potential future needs).
  4. All 9600 version radios will only have P25 firmware.
  5. There is a list of items included and not included in the EFJ bundle on this page.

Warranty

All EF Johnson radios sold by Genesis include 1 year parts and labor. All warranty work must be done at the EF Johnson Depot. Genesis has committed to keep a limited number of 53SL radios on hand to be used as loaner radios while your radio is being repaired by the EF Johnson Depot.

Our support specialists will work with you to determine the nature of the problem - whether it is with your radio or if external factors are at play.

Genesis makes every effort to extend the EF Johnson warranty to the end customer.

EFJohnson 53SL Radio Bundle

EF Johnson TechnologiesThe question everyone asks: "Why doesn't Motorola have an RF-modem for P25 (9600)?" The simple answer is: It was a Motorola marketing and engineering decision. For an in-depth explanation, click here. From our perspective, it was obvious the industry wanted and needed some way to listen to and decode the P25 CAI (Control Channel). We at Genesis developed a cooperative relationship with EF Johnson Technologies® to fill that void. With the EFJ53SL radio, we can extract the 9600 CAI as well as the 3600 Control Channel. This is the one unique radio in the industry that can do both.

As P25 (9600) systems professionals, we have expertise in ordering and programming the EFJ 53SL Radio as a replacemet for the MCS2000 for 3600 systems. This means that all Genesis' RF-based products (GenWatch3®, GEnSAC and GenSPOut) integrate very nicely with this radio. One distinct advantage is this radio allows migration from 3600 to P25 for the aforementioned products.

GenWatch3 EFJ 53SL Fast Triage Guide

Use this guide to diagnose connection issues between GenWatch3® and the EF Johnson 53xx Mobile Radio. If issues suddenly appear on an existing installation, remember to ask "What has recently changed?" GenWatch3 relies on a 3-step process to receive data from the EF Johnson 53SL Mobile Radio:

  1. Receiving Control Channel Data
  2. Transmitting this data to the GenWatch3 Host
  3. GenWatch3 settings and license restrictions
